For me, there's nothing more multiplayer ...

Counter strike. (source or 1.6, either way.) It's simple with no vehicles or huge environmental destruction. It has very little in the way of tactics and the graphics engine is aging. But it's its simplicity that makes it so perfect. Like most of Valve's games, it is well balanced, the weapons feel right and the gunplay is addictive. The huge number of custom maps adds to this. GG and surf games make up almost half of the servers, which says something indeed. I still play UT3, Crysis, CoD4 etc. but nothing has the sheer addictiveness and simple fun of CS. Pity the XBOX version sucks, I'm glad I'm a PC gamer. For me, there's nothing more multiplayer ...
I think it's pretty obvious that Counter-Strike 1.6 and Source are the epitome of first person shooters out there. For me, there's nothing more multiplayer ...
Day of Defeats (both source and hl1's) as well as Team fortress 2 are all up there really in smaller scale multiplayer games.
