It's kind of surprising that although the Wii is selling like crazy, Nintendo has so far produced very few big-name first-party titles. Aside from the Big Three, it sometimes seems like Nintendo is only making casual games. Star Fox, Donkey Kong, Kid Icarus, and more classic Nintendo franchises, long overdue for a sequel, still haven't received any attention from the Big N, and no new high-profile original IPs (ala Pikmin last gen, which should also be on the previous list come to think of it) are in the works either. The question is, why would Nintendo neglect big-name, big-budget titles? It's just a theory, but I'm thinking that Nintendo is going to save their ammunition, so to speak, for the later years of this generation. Wii sales have been stellar so far without a lot of effort on behalf of Nintendo's dev studios, so there's really no reason to start pumping out games now. However, when the inevitable slack in sales and the ''Wii is just a fad'' mentality sets in, Nintendo will hit back with these high-profile releases.Does this theory seem plausible at all? Anybody have any different thoughts for why there's this gap in big-budget first-party games?Nintendo holding back on franchise reviv ...
You're probably right. Though we will see a few more big titles in the secnd half of this year.Nintendo holding back on franchise reviv ...
it would be really selfish of them to do such a thing. why starve your current fanbase of great games just because the wii doesnt ''need'' them? i feel sorry for faithful sheep who are once again getting cheated by the counterintuitive success of the wii.
I don't know about that, Mario Galaxies, SSBB, and TP ended up on the Wii first. I probably cant count TP though, as it was also on the 'cube
The only real crux is that if Wii sales do die down, Nintendo can't just make a game in a couple of months that can boost the sales back up. They would be more likely to do a price drop and then release more games later to keep the momentum going.
This is what Reggie said on the newest episode of GTTV: ''We are going to unveil the whole second half during E3... we are going to have great new content, maximizing all our key franchises''
I worry that they won't have anything new for a long time. I understand Retro is making something new but it will probably take them some time to put a big time game together.
It would be foolhardy to withhold 5 fully completed games just so you can use them when Wii sales need a boost so no I think your theory is wrong.
Nintendo has put out more 1st Party and 2nd Party games out in this time from then the GC last gen in this same exact time frame. Not only that the Nintendo games are of higher quality. So we are getting more Nintendo games and higher rated nintendo games and yet people are complaining lol
First party support has never been a problem. It's third party support.

Anything that isn't AAA hyped or have a lot of commercials on TV doesn't count as a hardcore game.
Honestly, I don't think Nintendo did a very good job in spacing out their big exclusives. We had the Big Three in about a year, and Smash about 4 months afterwards. So what about the latter half of 2008? They better announce something at E3 or TGS.... You may be on to something here. Personally speaking, I'd love to see new IPs and revived IPs.
Its been little over a year since the Wii came out and its already got Zelda, Metroid, Super Mario, Paper Mario, Mario Party, a Mario sports game, Fire Emblem, Smash Bros and a Kart game is coming next month :?
The only big franchise they have left is Animal Crossing. If you ask me, they've blown their load a little to soon.

It probably makes more business sense to hold back on as many big guns as you can until you need them. Put them out slowly, maximize the selling power of your other titles... We dont like it, but it's what they do.

If they have been holding back i guess i can see the logic, it is much easier to entice casual and non gamers with non threatening simple games to wean them in and then gradually move them on to hardcore games, its a long term aim and if that is what happens then it will have done nintendo no harm at all and will further bolster their market dominance
all I can say is sit and watch nintendo surpise ou casue they are very secretive about everything
I think they are spacing their releases so that 3rd party games get a little more spotlight.
