Video Games: XNA vs. LittleBigPlanet / P ...

Community vs. Community vs. Microsoft recently has been talking about building communities and Sony has been talking about this from 2005. GDC (Games Developers Conference) 08 Microsoft announced XNA where they'll build a community of game developers. Way before that Sony has been working on PlayStation Home and Media Molecule has been working on LittleBigPlanet. All three of these things are very similar because they all incorporate communities and LittleBigPlanet is just part of the big community Sony is offering. What are they?XNA Dream. Build. Play.Interview: Chris SatchellDeveloper: MicrosoftSubscription Fee: $99.99 / yr Platform: PC, XBOX 360, ZuneReleases: 2.0 Dec. 13, 2007XNA is basically a set of tools provided by Microsoft to skip all the coding that comes with video games and focus on results. The tools were announced in March 24, 2004 at GDC in San Jose, California. Apparently there was a contest of using these tools to get a spot on XBOX Live Arcade and Microsoft decided to release it to everyone without picking and choosing. You can only make money if a publisher sees your game and decides to put it on XBOX Live or something. LittleBigPlanet / PlayStation Home Play. Create. Share. / Your Life. Your Network. Your HomeInterview: Alex EvensDeveloper: Media MoleculeSubscription Fee: FreePlatform: PlayStation 3Releases: Spring (PlayStaion Home), Sept. (LittleBigPlanet)LittleBigPlanet is a game that will have its own community about building games but not in the same way as XNA. XNA is more on flash based games LittleBigPlanet is more on creating an experience in a 3D environment that you're given. The reason why PlayStation Home is there that's because they're doing integration between the two plus it's free. That's why I didn't include XBOX Live with XNA because you have to pay for the two. Lets me see this in actionXNA LittleBigPlanet Conclusion Both are very good services I'm just not that willing to pay for the service but might pay for individual games that make it to XBOX Live Arcade. I know I'm comparing a game to a service where you create games but when you really look at it they're very similar in a lot of ways. The only difference is that you only have one character and it's more focused on environments. All I have to say it's getting very interesting because this is just a small part of what PlayStation Home will deliver with community. The big game that Microsoft is talking about is The Dish Washer Dead Samurai that can be played on the PC and XBOX 360. XNA is a good environment for people who want to program / make games but for someone looking to solely play games, like me is a bit cautious. I could be paying for a service with crappy games while the good ones will just eventually make it to the regular XBOX Live Arcade. With LittleBigPlanet it's just a really diverse level editor with no subscriptions. What do you think of these two services and will you pay $99.99 / yr to rent developer tools? Mental Note: I didn't mention mods on the PlayStation 3 becaus I don't think that appeals to everyone to make mods.Video Games: XNA vs. LittleBigPlanet / P ...

So you're comparing a set of development tools to a GAME and a Second Life wanna be?
They're really two very different things, like you've already pointed out. It's interesting to see how MS and Sony took different approaches to bringing user-created content to their platform. As a programmer myself I'm definitely big into the DX/XNA stuff, but it would be nice if you didn't have to pay for it and it were easier to distribute your games to your friends. For now I'm still sticking with good old PC + DirectX, since there's zero restrictions for that and I can just have people download my game whenever I want.

As for LBP...I think it's cool but I think we need to wait to see what kind of community comes out of it.
You can't compare! They are totally different things!XNA is designed for small time devs whereas LittleBigPlanet is designed for the average joe users and Home is just totally different from either...............
So you're comparing a set of development tools to a GAME and a Second Life wanna be?
As different as they are, they're just opposite approaches to solving the same problem: bringing user-made content to a console. I think it's an interesting topic.
You can't compare! Home isn't supose to be your second life it's connecting, communicating, and sharing. Home fits is more then you may think because Home isn't a game but a community to connect to your games.
This thread should die they are not comparable
So you're comparing a set of development tools to a GAME and a Second Life wanna be?
You use developing tools to create games, LittleBigPlanet you use in game tools to create a level, and Home is a connected community. Home isn't suppose to replace your life like most people say. It fits in more then you think.

2 vs. 1? yeah good poll

XNA is a tool and LBP is a game

The vast majority of 360 gamers won't ever do ANYTHING with XNA. Ever. Never ever.

Its free to use xna with windows as well as you don't have to use gfw live for online. Still its not the best compasion being that you need to know c# and other things to use xna and you don't need to know how to program for the other 2.

LittleBigPlanet is about creating levels without learning a whole new button scheme. Really look at the picture the games aren't going to big budget titles. One person can make a game with XNA and one person can make a level with LittleBigPlanet.

Do i prefer carrot cake or jet engines? hmm thats a toughie...If the question was xbl vs. psn games i'd go for psn having played/owned both.
